Hyyge (pronounced hoo-guh) is the Danish art of happiness. Although there is no direct English translation, it basically means 'to be cosy'. Think how you would feel if you were sat by the fire with some fresh out of the oven cinnamon swirls. That feeling is hygge.
"Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit and resign yourself to the influences of earth." Henry David Thoreau, poet & philosopher.
Seasonal change is upon us, the air has turned to have a sharp bitterness and the leaves have said their goodbyes ready for the cooler months. The warm smell of smoke in the air, filling our souls with that nostalgic feeling of bonfire night.
Light some candles
The power of candles is embraced by the Danes as one of the most powerful ways to create 'hygge' instantly. The soft, flickering flames automatically take you into a relaxing state of mind. The Danes will burn plain, white candles. But for extra relaxation, an essential oil filled candle will provide even more hygge (please note that it must be an essential oil candle and not a synthetic fragrance, theres a difference.)
Take a bath, full of essential oils and healing salts
Taking a long, relaxing bath is the epitome of hygge. Grab yourself a novel and embrace the soothing feeling of melting into the bathtub. Make the most of your bath experience by adding some epsom salts to detoxify the body and using a healing and essential oil full bath potion like this one.
Grab a coffee with a dear friend
Enjoy a coffee (or a PSL, it is that season!) with someone who you hold dearly, be it a family member or a friend you haven't seen for a while. It's the little things in life that bring us so much joy, yet we hardly do them. So, this season, make it a priority and get that hygge spirit.
Embrace the season and enjoy it all. This is the most wonderful time of year after all!
Let us know how you embrace hygge. We love reading your comments!
